Status of the Constitution
- English(1) This Constitution is the supreme law of the State.
(2) Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, any law inconsistent with this Constitution is invalid to the extent of the inconsistency.
(3) This Constitution shall be upheld and respected by all Fijians and the State, including all persons holding public office, and the obligations imposed by this Constitution must be fulfilled.
(4) This Constitution shall be enforced through the courts, to ensure that––
(a) laws and conduct are consistent with this Constitution;
(b) rights and freedoms are protected; and
(c) duties under this Constitution are performed.
(5) This Constitution cannot be abrogated or suspended by any person, and may only be amended in accordance with the procedures prescribed in Chapter 11.
(6) Any attempt to establish a Government other than in compliance with this Constitution shall be unlawful, and––
(a) anything done to further that attempt is invalid and of no force or effect; and
(b) no immunities can lawfully be granted under any law to any person in respect of actions taken or omitted in furtherance of such an attempt. (Sec. 2) - iTaukei(1) Na Yavunivakavulewa qo e lawa cecere duadua ni Matanitu.

- EnglishThe legislation and the regulations in force in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania continue to be applicable as long as they have not been modified, in the forms specified in the Constitution.
The laws prior to the Constitution must be modified, if it applies, to render them in conformity with the constitutional rights and freedoms within a time period not exceeding three years counting from the date of promulgation of this Constitutional Law.
In case that the modifications provided for in the preceding paragraph are not adopted [apportées] in the prescribed times, any individual can refer [déférer] these laws to the Constitutional Council for examination of their constitutionality. (المادّة 102) - FrenchLa législation et la réglementation en vigueur en République islamique de Mauritanie restent applicables tant qu’elles n’ont pas été modifiées, dans les formes prévues par la Constitution.
Les lois antérieures à la Constitution doivent être modifiées, s’il y a lieu, pour les rendre conformes aux droits et libertés constitutionnels, dans un délai n’excédant pas trois (3) ans pour compter de la date de promulgation de la présente loi constitutionnelle.
Au cas où les modifications prévues à l'alinéa précédent ne sont pas apportées dans les délais prescrits, tout individu pourra déférer ces lois au Conseil constitutionnel pour examen de leur constitutionnalité. Les dispositions déclarées inconstitutionnelles ne peuvent être appliquées. (Art. 102)
