Political Rights and Association
- EnglishThe suffrage can be direct or indirect, in the conditions specified by the law. It is always universal, equal, and secret.
All the citizens of the Republic, of majority of both sexes, enjoying their civil and political rights, are electors.
The law favors the equal access of women and of men to the electoral mandates and elective functions. (Art. 3) - Arabicيكون الاقتراع مباشرا أو غير مباشر حسب الشّروط المنصوص عليها في القانون، و هو عام على الدّوام متساو و سريّ.
يعتبر ناخبا كل من بلغ سنّ الرّشد من مواطني الجمهورية، ذكرا أو أنثى و يتمتّع بحقوقه المدنيّة و السّياسية.
يحبذ القانون الوصول المتكافي للمرأة والرجل إلى الولايات والوظائف الانتخابية. (المادّة 3) - FrenchLe suffrage peut être direct ou indirect, dans les conditions prévues par la loi. Il est toujours universel, égal et secret.
Sont électeurs tous les citoyens de la République, majeurs des deux sexes, jouissant de leurs droits civils et politiques.
La loi favorise l’égal accès des femmes et des hommes aux mandats électoraux et fonctions électives. (Art. 3)
Political Rights and Association
- EnglishThe State guarantees to all citizens the public and individual freedoms, notably:

Political Parties
- EnglishThe political parties and groups concur in [concourent] the formation and to the expression of the political will. They are formed and they exercise their activities freely under the condition of respecting the democratic principles and of not infringing, by their object or by their action[,] the national sovereignty, the territorial integrity, and the unity of the Nation and of the Republic.
The law establishes the conditions of creation, of functioning, and of dissolution of the political parties. (Art. 11) - Arabicتساهم الأحزاب و التّجمعات السّياسية في تكوين الإرادة السّياسية و التّعبير عنها. تتكوّن الأحزاب و التّجمعات السّياسية و تمارس نشاطها بحرّية بشرط احترام المبادئ الديمقراطية، و شرط أن لا تمسّ من خلال عرضها و نشاطها بالسّيادة الوطنية والسلامة الإقليمية ووحدة الأمة و الجمهورية.
يحدّد القانون شروط انشاء و سير و حلّ الأحزاب السياسية. (المادّة 11) - FrenchLes partis et groupements politiques concourent à la formation et l'expression de la volonté politique. Ils se forment et exercent leurs activités librement sous la condition de respecter les principes démocratiques et de ne pas porter atteinte par leur objet ou par leur action à la souveraineté nationale, à l'intégrité territoriale à l'unité de la Nation et de la République.
La loi fixe les conditions de création, de fonctionnement et de dissolution des partis politiques. (Art. 11)

- EnglishThe President of the Republic is the Head of the State. He is of Muslim religion. (Art. 23)

Head of State
- EnglishThe President of the Republic is the guardian of the Constitution. He incarnates the State. He assures, through his arbitration, the continuous and regular functioning of the public powers.

- EnglishThe President of the Republic is elected for five years by universal direct suffrage.

Every citizen born Mauritanian enjoying their civil and political rights and at least forty (40) years old, and at most seventy five (75) years old, at the date of the first round of the election[,] is eligible to the Presidency of the Republic.
