  • English
    A person is a Cuban citizen through birth if:
    a. They are born within the national territory, with the exception of the children of foreigners that are in the service of their government or an international organization. The law establishes the requirements and the formalities for cases involving the children of foreigners who are not permanent residents within the country;
    b. They are born abroad to a Cuban mother or father, who were completing an official mission, according to the requirements and formalities established by the law;
    c. They are born abroad to a Cuban mother or father, having previously complied with the requirements and formalities indicated by the law, or
    d. They are born outside the national territory to a mother or father native to the Republic of Cuba that has lost Cuban citizenship, as long as they reclaim it in the form indicated by the law. (Art. 34)

    Son ciudadanos cubanos por nacimiento:
    a) los nacidos en el territorio nacional, con excepción de los hijos de extranjeros que se encuentren al servicio de su gobierno o de organismos internacionales. La ley establece los requisitos y las formalidades para el caso de los hijos de los extranjeros no residentes permanentes en el país;
    b) los nacidos en el extranjero de padre o madre cubanos que se hallen cumpliendo misión oficial, de acuerdo con los requisitos y las formalidades que establece la ley;
    c) los nacidos en el extranjero de padre o madre cubanos, previo cumplimiento de los requisitos y las formalidades que la ley señala; y
    d) los nacidos fuera del territorio nacional de padre o madre cubanos por nacimiento que hayan perdido la ciudadanía cubana, siempre que la reclamen en la forma que señala la ley. (Art. 34)

    A person is a Cuban citizen through naturalization if:
    a. They are a foreigner that acquires citizenship according to the provisions of the law.
    b. Having been arbitrarily deprived of their citizenship in their country of origin, they obtain Cuban citizenship at the discretion of the President of the Republic. (Art. 35)

    Son ciudadanos cubanos por naturalización:
    a) los extranjeros que adquieren la ciudadanía de acuerdo con lo establecido en la ley;
    b) los que obtengan la ciudadanía cubana por decisión del Presidente de la República. (Art. 35)

    The acquisition of other citizenship does not imply the loss of Cuban citizenship. Cuban citizens, as long as they are within national territory, are governed by this condition, in the terms established by the law, and may not make use of another citizenship. (Art. 36)

    La adquisición de otra ciudadanía no implica la pérdida de la ciudadanía cubana. Los ciudadanos cubanos, mientras se encuentren en el territorio nacional, se rigen por esa condición, en los términos establecidos en la ley y no pueden hacer uso de una ciudadanía extranjera. (Art. 36)

    Cubans may not be deprived of their citizenship, except for legally sanctioned causes.
    The law establishes the procedure to be followed in order to formalize the loss or renouncement of citizenship as well as the authorities empowered to decide in these cases. (Art. 38)

    Los cubanos no pueden ser privados de su ciudadanía, salvo por causas legalmente establecidas.
    La ley establece el procedimiento a seguir para la formalización de la pérdida y renuncia de la ciudadanía y las autoridades facultadas para decidirlo. (Art. 38)

    Cuban citizenship may be recovered in accordance with the requirements and formalities prescribed by the law. (Art. 39)
