Citizenship and Nationality

    Those born in the territory of the Republic of Guatemala, [on] Guatemalan vessels and aircraft[,] and the children of a Guatemalan father or mother, born abroad, are considered native Guatemalans of origin. The children of diplomatic officials and of those who perform legally comparable duties are excepted.
    No native Guatemalan can be deprived of his [or her] nationality. (Art. 144)

    Son guatemaltecos de origen, los nacidos en el territorio de la República de Guatemala, naves y aeronaves guatemaltecas y los hijos de padre o madre guatemaltecos, nacidos en el extranjero. Se exceptúan los hijos de funcionarios diplomáticos y de quienes ejerzan cargos legalmente equiparados.
    A ningún guatemalteco de origen, puede privársele de su nacionalidad. (Art. 144)

    The nationals by birth of the republics that constituted the Federation of Central America, if they acquire domicile in Guatemala and manifest before the competent authority their wish to become Guatemalans, will also be considered Guatemalans of origin. In such case they can retain their nationality of origin, without prejudice to what is established in [the] Central American treaties or agreements. (Art. 145)

    También se consideran guatemaltecos de origen, a los nacionales por nacimiento, de las repúblicas que constituyeron la Federación de Centroamérica, si adquieren domicilio en Guatemala y manifestaren ante autoridad competente, su deseo de ser guatemaltecos. En este caso podrán conservar su nacionalidad de origen, sin perjuicio de lo que se establezca en tratados o convenios centroamericanos. (Art. 145)

    Those who obtain their naturalization in accordance with the law are Guatemalans.
    The naturalized Guatemalans, have the same rights as those of origin, except for the limitations established in this Constitution. (Art. 146)

    Los guatemaltecos naturalizados, tienen los mismos derechos que los de origen, salvo las limitaciones que establece esta Constitución. (Art. 146)
