- English1. The Senate will be composed of seventy senators who are elected for a mandate of five years by universal, direct and secret suffrage in general elections that are celebrated on one sole day and within the sixty days before or following the expiration of their mandate.
2. The law determines the number of senators of free appointment [designaci6n] of the President of the Republic among the seventy senators.
3. The Electoral Law defines the electoral circumscriptions and determines the number of seats corresponding to each one, the regime of eligibility and ineligibility and [of] compatibility and incompatibility of the senators and develops other aspects of the electoral process.

(3) He shall be legally or equitably seised as of Freehold for his own Use and Benefit of Lands or Tenements held in Free and Common Socage, or seised or possessed for his own Use and Benefit of Lands or Tenements held in Franc-alleu or in Roture, within the Province for which he is appointed, of the Value of Four thousand Dollars, over and above all Rents, Dues, Debts, Charges, Mortgages, and Incumbrances due or payable out of or charged on or affecting the same;
(4) His Real and Personal Property shall be together worth Four thousand Dollars over and above his Debts and Liabilities;
(5) He shall be resident in the Province for which he is appointed;

- English(1) The Senate shall consist of 11 Senators and such other Senators as may be temporarily appointed under section 28.
(2) Of the 11 Senators—
(a) 6 shall be appointed by the Governor General, acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister;

a. is a Commonwealth citizen of not less than the age of 18 years;

c. has resided in Mauritius for a period of not less, than 6 months immediately before that date; and
