- EnglishIn order to be eligible as member of the National Assembly it is necessary:
1. To be Panamanian by birth, or through naturalization, and to have resided for fifteen years in the country after naturalization;
2. To be a citizen in the exercise of his/her legal rights;
3. To be at least twenty one years of age at the time of election;
4. Not to have been sentenced for premeditated offense to five years or more in prison by enforceable decision of a court of law;
5. To be a resident of the respective constituency for at least one (1) year before being nominated for office. (Art. 153) - SpanishPara ser Diputado se requiere:
1. Ser panameño por nacimiento, o por naturalización con quince años de residencia en el país después de haber obtenido la nacionalización.

II. In each Department, half of the Deputies (Diputados) shall be elected by direct voting electoral districts. The other half shall be elected by proportional voting electoral districts, from lists headed by candidates for President, Vice President and the Senators of the Republic.
III. Deputies are elected by universal, direct and secret vote. In the single Districts, they are elected by simply majority of the voters; in the multiple districts, by a system of representation established by law.
IV. The number of Deputies must reflect the proportional vote obtained by each party, citizen group or indigenous people.

The Chamber of Senators will be composed of one hundred twenty eight senators [feminine] and senators [masculine], of whom, in each State and in the City of México, two will be elected following the principle of relative majority vote and one will be assigned to the first minority. For these effects, the political parties must register a list with two formulations [formulas] of candidates. The office of senator of the first minority [senaduría de primera minoría] will be assigned to the formulation of candidates that heads [encabeca] the list of the political party that, by itself, has occupied [ocupado] the second place in the number of votes in the entity concerned.
The thirty-two offices of senator [senadurías] remaining will be elected following the principle of proportional representation, through the system of lists voted in a sole national plurinomial circumscription conformed in accordance with the principle of parity, and headed alternately between women and men each elective period. The law will establish the regulations and formulas for these effects.
The Chamber of Senators will be renewed in its totality each six years. (Art. 56) - Spanish
La Cámara de Senadores se integrará por ciento veintiocho senadoras y senadores, de los cuales, en cada Estado y en la Ciudad de México, dos serán elegidos según el principio de votación mayoritaria relativa y uno será asignado a la primera minoría. Para estos efectos, los partidos políticos deberán registrar una lista con dos fórmulas de candidatos. La senaduría de primera minoría le será asignada a la fórmula de candidaturas que encabece la lista del partido político que, por sí mismo, haya ocupado el segundo lugar en número de votos en la entidad de que se trate.
Las treinta y dos senadurías restantes serán elegidas según el principio de representación proporcional, mediante el sistema de listas votadas en una sola circunscripción plurinominal nacional, conformadas de acuerdo con el principio de paridad, y encabezadas alternadamente entre mujeres y hombres cada periodo electivo. La ley establecerá las reglas y fórmulas para estos efectos.
La Cámara de Senadores se renovará en su totalidad cada seis años. (Art. 56)
