1. The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan shall be elected in accordance with the constitutional law by adult citizens of the Republic based on universal, equal and direct suffrage by secret ballot for a period of seven years.

A citizen of the Republic by birth who is at least forty years old, fluent in the state language, has lived in Kazakhstan for the last fifteen years and has a higher education, may be elected President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The constitutional law may establish additional requirements for candidates for the President of the Republic.
