Political Rights and Association
- EnglishSuffrage is universal, equal, free and transparent. It may be direct or indirect within the conditions provided for by the law.
All Burundians being already [révolus] eighteen years of age and enjoying their civil and political rights[,] are electors, within the conditions determined by the electoral code. (Ingingo ya 8) - FrenchLe suffrage est universel, égal, secret, libre et transparent. Il peut être direct ou indirect dans les conditions prévues par la loi.
Sont électeurs, dans les conditions déterminées par le code électoral, tous les burundais âgés de dix-huit ans révolus et jouissant de leurs droits civils et politiques. (Art. 8)

- English… No Burundian may be excluded from the social, economical or political life of the nation because of their race, of their language, of their religion, of their sex or of their ethnic origin. (Art. 13)
- Kirundi… Nta murundi n’umwe azokumirwa mu vyerekeye imibano, ubutunzi canke intwaro y’igihugu kubera ibara ry’urukoba, ururimi, idini, igitsina canke ubwoko vyiwe. (Ingingo ya 13)
- French… Aucun burundais ne sera exclu de la vie sociale, économique ou politique de la nation du fait de sa race, de sa langue, de sa religion, de son sexe ou de son origine ethnique. (Art. 13)

- EnglishThe Burundian Government must be composed so that all Burundians are represented in it and that it represents them all; that each has equal opportunities to be a part of it; that all citizens have access to the public services and that the decisions and the actions of the Government obtain the largest possible support. (Art. 16)

(Art. 16)

- EnglishEvery Burundian has the right to participate, either directly, or indirectly through their representatives, in the direction and in the administration [gestion] of the affairs of the State, under reserve of the legal conditions, notably of age and of capacity.
Every Burundian has equally the right to accede to the public functions of their country. Umurundi wese arashobora kandi gushingwa amabanga y’igihugu ciwe. (Ingingo ya 51) - FrenchTout burundais a le droit de participer, soit directement, soit indirectement par ses représentants, à la direction et à la gestion des affaires de l’Etat sous réserve des conditions légales, notamment d’âge et de capacité.
Tout burundais a également le droit d’accéder aux fonctions publiques de son pays. (Art. 51)

- EnglishThe elections of the Deputies take place following the ballot of bloc lists [listes bloquées] by proportional representation. These lists must have a multi-ethnic character and take into account the equilibrium between men and women. For three candidates registered together [inscrits à la suite] on a list, only two may belong to the same ethnic group, and at least one in three must be a woman. (Art. 173)

- FrenchLes élections des députés se déroulement suivant le scrutin des listes bloquées à la représentation proportionnelle. Ces listes doivent avoir un caractère multiethnique et tenir compte de l’équilibre entre les hommes et les femmes. Pour trois candidats inscrits à la suite sur une liste, deux seulement peuvent appartenir au même groupe ethnique, et au moins un sur trois doit être une femme. (Art. 173)
