Citizenship and Nationality

    [The following] are Salvadorans by birth:
    1) Those born in the territory of El Salvador;
    2) The children of a Salvadoran father or mother, born abroad;
    3) The natives [originarios] of the other States that constituted the Federal Republic of Central America, who having [a] domicile in El Salvador, manifest before the competent authorities their will to be Salvadoran, without requiring of them the renunciation of their nationality of origin. (Art. 90)

    Son salvadoreños por nacimiento:
    1º- Los nacidos en el territorio de El Salvador;
    2º- Los hijos de padre o madre salvadoreños, nacidos en el extranjero;
    3º- Los originarios de los demás Estados que constituyeron la República Federal de Centro América, que teniendo domicilio en El Salvador, manifiesten ante las autoridades competentes su voluntad de ser salvadoreños, sin que se requiera la renuncia a su nacionalidad de origen. (Art. 90)

    The Salvadorans by birth have the right to enjoy the double or multiple nationality.
    The quality of [being] Salvadoran by birth is only lost by an expressed renouncement before a competent authority and is recovered by petition before the same [authority]. (Art. 91)

    Los salvadoreños por nacimiento tienen derecho a gozar de la doble o múltiple nacionalidad.
    La calidad de salvadoreño por nacimiento sólo se pierde por renuncia expresa ante autoridad competente y se recupera por solicitud ante la misma. (Art. 91)

    [The following] may obtain the Salvadoran status [calidad] by naturalization:
    1) The Spaniards and Hispano-Americans of origin that have one year of residence in the country;
    2) The foreigners of any origin that have five years of residence in the country;
    3) Those who obtain this quality from the Legislative Organ for noteworthy services rendered for the Republic;
    4) A foreigner [masculine] married to a Salvadoran [feminine] or a foreigner [feminine] married to a Salvadoran [masculine] that can accredit two years of residence in the country, prior to or after the celebration of the matrimony.
    The nationality by naturalization will be granted by competent authorities in accordance with the law. (Art. 92)

    Pueden adquirir la calidad de salvadoreños por naturalización:
    1º- Los españoles e hispanoamericanos de origen que tuvieren un año de residencia en el país;
    2º- Los extranjeros de cualquier origen que tuvieren cinco años de residencia en el país;
    3º- Los que por servicios notables prestados a la República obtengan esa calidad del Órgano Legislativo;
    4º- El extranjero casado con salvadoreña o la extranjera casada con salvadoreño que acreditaren dos años de residencia en el país, anteriores o posteriores a la celebración del matrimonio.
    La nacionalidad por naturalización se otorgará por autoridades competentes de conformidad con la ley. (Art. 92)

    The international treaties will regulate the form and [the] conditions in which nationals of countries which do not form part of the Federal Republic of Central America retain their nationality; notwithstanding having acquired the Salvadoran [nationality] by naturalization, as long as the principle of reciprocity is respected. (Art. 93)

    Los tratados internacionales regularán la forma y condiciones en que los nacionales de países que no formaron parte de la República Federal de Centro América conserven su nacionalidad, no obstante haber adquirido la salvadoreña por naturalización, siempre que se respete el principio de reciprocidad. (Art. 93)

    The status [calidad] of [a] naturalized Salvadoran is lost:
    1) By residing for more than two consecutive years in the country of origin or by absence from the territory of the Republic for more than five consecutive years, unless in case of a permission granted in accordance with the law;
    2) By executed sentence, in the cases determined by the law. Anyone who loses his nationality in this manner cannot recover it. (Art. 94)

    La calidad de salvadoreño naturalizado se pierde:
    1º- Por residir más de dos años consecutivos en el país de origen o por ausencia del territorio de la República por más de cinco años consecutivos, salvo en caso de permiso otorgado conforme a la ley;
    2º- Por sentencia ejecutoriada, en los casos que determine la ley. Quien pierda así la nacionalidad, no podrá recuperarla. (Art. 94)
