National sovereignty resides in the People who exercise it through democratic instruments[,] deciding and participating freely in the construction and perfecting of the economic, political, cultural and social system of the nation. The people exercise the sovereign power through their representatives freely elected by universal, equal, direct and secret suffrage, barring any other individual or group of persons from arrogating this representation. It may be also exercised directly by means of the referendum and of the plebiscite. In the same way, it will be able to [podrd] exercise it through other direct mechanisms, such as the participative budgets, the citizen initiatives, the territorial Councils, the territorial and communal assemblies of the indigenous and Afro-descendant Peoples, the sectoral Councils, and other procedures [procedimientos] that this Constitution and the laws establish. (Art. 2)

La soberanía nacional reside en el pueblo y la ejerce a través de instrumentos democráticos decidiendo y participando libremente en la construcción y perfeccionamiento del sistema económico, político, cultural y social de la nación. El poder soberano lo ejerce el pueblo por medio de sus representantes libremente elegidos por sufragio universal, igual, directo y secreto, sin que ninguna otra persona o reunión de personas pueda arrogarse esta representación. También lo puede ejercer de forma directa a través del referéndum y el plebiscito. Asimismo, podrá ejercerlo a través de otros mecanismos directos, como los presupuestos participativos, las iniciativas ciudadanas, los Consejos territoriales, las asambleas territoriales y comunales de los pueblos originarios y afrodescendientes, los Consejos sectoriales, y otros procedimientos que se establezcan en la presente Constitución y las leyes. The unconditional equality of all Nicaraguans in the enjoyment of political rights[,] is established; in the exercise of them and in the fulfillment of their duties and responsibilities, [there] exists absolute equality between the man and the woman.
It is the obligation of the State to eliminate the obstacles that impede the actuality [hecho] of equality among Nicaraguans and their effective participation in the political, economic and social life of the country. (Art. 48) - Spanish
Se establece la igualdad incondicional de todos los nicaragüenses en el goce de sus derechos políticos; en el ejercicio de los mismos y en el cumplimiento de sus deberes y responsabilidades, existe igualdad absoluta entre el hombre y la mujer.
Es obligación del Estado eliminar los obstáculos que impidan de hecho la igualdad entre los nicaragüenses y su participación efectiva en la vida política, económica y social del país. (Art. 48)

Citizens have the right to participate in equality of conditions in public affairs and in state management.
In the formulation, execution, evaluation, control and monitoring [seguimiento] of the public and social policies, as well as the public services, the participation of the person, the family and the community will be guaranteed, the Law will guarantee their effective participation, nationally and locally. (Art. 50) - Spanish
Los ciudadanos tienen derecho de participar en igualdad de condiciones en los asuntos públicos y en la gestión estatal.
En la formulación, ejecución, evaluación, control y seguimiento de las políticas públicas y sociales, así como los servicios públicos, se garantizará la participación de la persona, la familia y la comunidad, la Ley garantizará su participación efectiva, nacional y localmente. (Art. 50)

In all the functions of the Sovereign Power established in this Constitution, appointments may not be made to fall to persons who have [a] close relation with the authority that makes the appointment and, as the case may be, with the person from whom this authority has emanated. For the appointments of principal functionaries, the prohibition will govern to the fourth grade of consanguinity and second of affinity. The law will regulate this matter.
This prohibition does not include the case of appointments that correspond to the compliance with the Law of Civil Service and of the Administrative Career, Law of the Teaching [Docente] Career, of [the] Judicial Career, of the Career of the - 29 Foreign Service, Law of Sanitary Career, Law of Municipal Career and other similar laws that may be adopted [dictaren]. En todas las funciones del Poder Soberano establecidas en esta Constitución, no se podrán hacer recaer nombramientos en personas que tengan parentesco cercano con la autoridad que hace el nombramiento y, en su caso, con la persona de donde hubiere emanado esta autoridad. Para los nombramientos de los funcionarios principales, regirá la prohibición del cuarto grado de consanguinidad y segundo de afinidad. La ley regulará esta materia.
Esta prohibición no comprende el caso de los nombramientos que correspondan al cumplimiento de la Ley del Servicio Civil y de la Carrera Administrativa, Ley de Carrera Docente, de Carrera Judicial, de Carrera del Servicio Exterior, Ley de Carrera Sanitaria, Ley de Carrera Municipal y demás leyes similares que se dictaren. (Art. 130)
