Head of State

The Executive Power is exercised by the President of the Republic, who is Head of State, Head of Government and Supreme Head of the Army of Nicaragua. (Art. 144)

Head of State

The election of the President and Vice President of the Republic is realized through universal, equal, direct, free and secret suffrage. Those obtaining the relative majority of votes will be elected.

Head of State

The following qualifications [calidades] are required to be the President or Vice President of the Republic:
1) To be a national of Nicaragua. Those who have acquired other nationality must have renounced it at least four years prior to the election being verified.
2) To be in full enjoyment of one's civil and political rights.
3) To have completed twenty-five years of age.
4) To have resided in continuous form in the country [for] the four years preceding the election, save [when] during this time [periodo] fulfilling a diplomatic mission, working in international organs [organismos] or realizing study abroad.

Para ser Presidente o Vicepresidente de la República se requiere de las siguientes calidades:
1) Ser nacional de Nicaragua. Quien hubiese adquirido otra nacionalidad deberá haber renunciado a ella al menos cuatro años antes de verificarse la elección.
2) Estar en pleno goce de sus derechos civiles y políticos.
3) Haber cumplido veinticinco años de edad.
4) Haber residido de forma continua en el país los cuatro años anteriores a la elección, salvo que durante dicho período cumpliere misión diplomática, trabajare en organismos internacionales o realizare estudios en el extranjero.

Vice-President

The Vice President of the Republic fulfills the functions that this Political Constitution specifies, and those that the President of the Republic delegates to him[,] directly or by the law.
Similarly he will substitute for the President, in cases of temporary or definitive inability [falta]. (Art. 145) - Spanish
El Vicepresidente de la República desempeña las funciones que le señale la presente Constitución Política, y las que le delegue el Presidente de la República directamente o a través de la ley.

The following are attributions of the President of the Republic:

6) To appoint and to remove the Ministers and Vice Ministers of State, Procurator and Sub-Procurator General of the Republic, Directors of Autonomous and Governmental Entities, Heads of Diplomatic Missions, and Heads of Special Missions, duly bringing the appointment to the cognizance of the National Assembly, within the time [termino] of three days for its ratification, which will be considered final [firme] when the National Assembly ratifies it, as well as to remove the functionaries from their offices [cargos] in the cases in which the National Assembly has so decided in use of its attributions.

The Legislative Power is exercised by the National Assembly by delegation and mandate of the people. The National Assembly is integrated by ninety Deputies with their respective substitutes elected by universal, equal, direct, free, and secret vote through the system of proportional representation.

Also, to have been born or resided for the last two years in the Department or Autonomous Region for which he intends to be [salir] elected.

c) Haber cumplido veintiún años de edad.

Además, haber nacido o haber residido durante los últimos dos años en el Departamento o Región Autónoma por el cual se pretende salir electo.
