Status of International Law

1. The King declares war, makes peace and concludes treaties and agreements.
2. Treaties and agreements which entail any expenditures to the Treasury of the State or affect the public or private rights of Jordanians shall not be valid unless approved by the Parliament; and in no case shall the secret terms in a treaty or agreement be contrary to the overt terms. (Art. 33) - Arabic
1.الملك هو الذي يعلن الحرب ويعقد الصلح ويبرم المعاهدات والاتفاقات.
2. المعاهدات والاتفاقات التي يترتب عليها تحميل خزانة الدولة شيئاً من النفقات او مساس في حقوق الاردنيين العامة او الخاصة لا تكون نافذة الا اذا وافق عليها مجلس الامة ولا يجوز في أي حال ان تكون الشروط السرية في معاهدة او اتفاق ما مناقضة للشروط العلنية. (المادّة 33)
Status of International Law

1. Civil Courts shall exercise their competences in respect of civil and criminal jurisprudence in accordance with the provisions of the laws in force in the Kingdom; however, in matters of personal status of foreigners or in civil and commercial matters which it is habitual in international tradition to apply the law of other countries in their regard, such law shall be applied in the manner provided for by the law.

1. تمارس المحاكم النظامية إختصاصها في القضاء الحقوقي والجزائي وفق أحكام القوانين النافذة المفعول في المملكة، على أنه في مسائل الأحوال الشخصية للأجانب أو في الأمور الحقوقية والتجارية التي قضت العادة في العرف الدولي بتطبيق قانون بلاد أخرى بشأنها ينفذ ذلك القانون بالكيفية التي ينصّ عليها القانون.

Constitution of The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan 1952, as amended to 2016 (English). We are aware amendments to the present constitution were adopted in 2022. To date, no English consolidated version is available publicly. Translation efforts are underway. According to Art. 2: “Islam is the religion of the State and Arabic is its official language.”
