Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste 2002
Status of International Law
- English1. The legal system of East Timor shall adopt the general or customary principles of international law.
2. Rules provided for in international conventions, treaties and agreements shall apply in the internal legal system of East Timor following their approval, ratification or accession by the respective competent organs and after publication in the official gazette.
3. All rules that are contrary to the provisions of international conventions, treaties and agreements applied in the internal legal system of East Timor shall be invalid. (Sec. 9) - Tetum1. Orden jurídika Timór nian adopta PRINSÍPIU sira direitu internasionál jerál nian eh hotuhotu nian.

3. Norma sira-ne’e sei la iha folin, sira latuir karik konvensaun no akordu internasionál sirane’ebé lei Timór nian simu tiha ona. (Art. 9) - Portuguese1. A ordem jurídica timorense adopta os princípios de direito internacional geral ou comum.
2. As normas constantes de convenções, tratados e acordos internacionais vigoram na ordem jurídica interna mediante aprovação, ratificação ou adesão pelos respectivos órgãos competentes e depois de publicadas no jornal oficial.
3. São inválidas todas as normas das leis contrárias às disposições das convenções, tratados e acordos internacionais recebidos na ordem jurídica interna timorense. (Art. 9)
Status of International Law

Status of International Law
- English1. Confirmation, accession and ratification of bilateral and multilateral conventions, treaties, agreements or alliances that took place before the entry into force of the present Constitution shall be decided upon by the respective competent bodies on a case-by-case basis.
2. The Democratic Republic of East Timor shall not be bound by any treaty, agreement or alliance entered into prior to the entry into force of the Constitution which is not confirmed or ratified or adhered to, pursuant to item 1 above.

… (Art. 158) - Portuguese1. A confirmação, adesão e ratificação das convenções, tratados, acordos ou alianças bilaterais ou multilaterais, anteriores à entrada em vigor da Constituição, são decididas, caso a caso, pelos órgãos competentes respectivos.
2. A República Democrática de Timor-Leste não fica vinculada por nenhum tratado, acordo ou aliança, celebrado anteriormente à entrada em vigor da Constituição, que não seja confirmado ou ratificado ou a que não haja adesão, nos termos do n.º 1.

Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste 2002 (English). According to Sec. 13(1): "Tetum and Portuguese shall be the official languages in the Democratic Republic of East Timor.” There are discrepancies in the English, Portuguese and Tetum texts.
