- English1. Fathers and mothers must render assistance to children born in or out of wedlock, particularly with respect to their feeding, maintenance and upbringing.
2. Fathers and mothers shall have the right to protection by the society and by the State as regards the realization of their irreplaceable role in relation to children.
3. Fatherhood and motherhood shall constitute eminent social values. (Art. 89) - Portuguese1. Os pais e as mães devem prestar assistência aos filhos nascidos dentro e fora do casamento, nomeadamente quanto à sua alimentação, guarda e educação.

It is the duty of the family, society, and the State to ensure children, adolescents, and young people, with absolute priority, the right to life, health, nourishment, education, leisure, professional training, culture, dignity, respect, freedom, and family and community life, as well as to guard them from all forms of negligence, discrimination, exploitation, violence, cruelty, and oppression.
Paragraph 1. The State shall promote full health assistance programmes for children, adolescents, and young people, the participation of non-governmental entities being allowed, by means of specific policies and with due regard to the following precepts:
I – allocation of a percentage of public health care funds to mother and child assistance;

Paragraph 6. Children born inside or outside wedlock or adopted shall have the same rights and qualifications, any discriminatory designation of their filiation being forbidden.

É dever da família, da sociedade e do Estado assegurar à criança, ao adolescente e ao jovem, com absoluta prioridade, o direito à vida, à saúde, à alimentação, à educação, ao lazer, à profissionalização, à cultura, à dignidade, ao respeito, à liberdade e à convivência familiar e comunitária, além de colocá-los a salvo de toda forma de negligência, discriminação, exploração, violência, crueldade e opressão.
§ 1º O Estado promoverá programas de assistência integral à saúde da criança, do adolescente e do jovem, admitida a participação de entidades não governamentais, mediante políticas específicas e obedecendo aos seguintes preceitos:
I - aplicação de percentual dos recursos públicos destinados à saúde na assistência materno-infantil;
