Education is an essential function of the State for the preservation, development, and dissemination of culture, which must extend its benefits to society without discrimination of any kind.
Public education shall be secular and shall be based on fundamental principles of democracy. It shall instill and promote in all students a deep feeling of Honduran patriotism and shall be directly connected with the economic and social development process of the country. (Art. 151) - Spanish
La educación es función esencial del Estado para la conservación, el fomento y difusión de la cultura, la cual deberá proyectar sus beneficios a la sociedad sin discriminación de ninguna naturaleza.

- English1 The State acknowledges that the primary and natural educator of the child is the Family and guarantees to respect the inalienable right and duty of parents to provide, according to their means, for the religious and moral, intellectual, physical and social education of their children.
2 Parents shall be free to provide this education in their homes or in private schools or in schools recognised or established by the State.
3 1° The State shall not oblige parents in violation of their conscience and lawful preference to send their children to schools established by the State, or to any particular type of school designated by the State.
2° The State shall, however, as guardian of the common good, require in view of actual conditions that the children receive a certain minimum education, moral, intellectual and social.
4 The State shall provide for free primary education and shall endeavour to supplement and give reasonable aid to private and corporate educational initiative, and, when the public good requires it, provide other educational facilities or institutions with due regard, however, for the rights of parents, especially in the matter of religious and moral formation. Initial, primary and secondary education are obligatory. In the institutions of the State, education is gratuitous. In the public universities the State guarantees the right to be educated gratuitously to students [alumnos] who maintain a satisfactory performance and who cannot account for the economic resources necessary to cover the costs of education.
With the objective to guarantee the greatest plurality in educational offerings, and in favor of those who cannot pay for their education, the law establishes the mode of subsidizing private education in any of its modalities, including communal and cooperative.
The State promotes the creation of centers of education wherever the population so requires.
The State guarantees the eradication of illiteracy. Similarly, it foments bilingual and intercultural education, according to the characteristics of each zone. It preserves the diverse cultural and linguistic manifestations of the country. It promotes national integration. (Art. 17) - Spanish
La educación inicial, primaria y secundaria son obligatorias. En las instituciones del Estado, la educación es gratuita. En las universidades públicas el Estado garantiza el derecho a educarse gratuitamente a los alumnos que mantengan un rendimiento satisfactorio y no cuenten con los recursos económicos necesarios para cubrir los costos de educación.
Con el fin de garantizar la mayor pluralidad de la oferta educativa, y en favor de quienes no puedan sufragar su educación, la ley fija el modo de subvencionar la educación privada en cualquiera de sus modalidades, incluyendo la comunal y la cooperativa.
El Estado promueve la creación de centros de educación donde la población los requiera.
El Estado garantiza la erradicación del analfabetismo. Asimismo, fomenta la educación bilingüe e intercultural, según las características de cada zona. Preserva las diversas manifestaciones culturales y lingüísticas del país. Promueve la integración nacional. (Art. 17)
