Marriage and the family constitute the natural and moral base of the human community. They are placed under the protection of the State.
The State and the public collectivities have the duty to see to the physical and moral health of the family and, in particular of the handicapped persons and of elderly [âgées] persons.
The State guarantees to families in general, and to those living in [the] rural milieu in particular [,] the access to the services of health and of well being. Parents have the natural right and the duty to educate and raise their children. They are supported, in this task, by the State and the public collectivities.

- English1. Everyone shall have the right to enter into matrimony, in civil or religious form.
2. The law shall regulate the requirements, the civil effects of marriage and its dissolution, irrespective of the form of its celebration.
3. Spouses shall have equal civil and political rights and duties.
4. Children shall only be separated from their parents through judicial decision and strictly in cases foreseen in the law, should the parents not comply with their fundamental duties towards them.
5. The discrimination against children born out of wedlock or the use of any discriminatory designation with respect to parenting shall not be allowed.
6. Adoption shall be allowed, with the law regulating its forms and conditions. (Art. 47) - Portuguese1. Todos têm direito de contrair casamento, sob forma civil ou religiosa.
2. A lei regula os requisitos e os efeitos civis do casamento e da sua dissolução, independentemente da forma de celebração.
3. Os cônjuges têm iguais direitos e deveres civis e políticos.
