(1) The Federal President shall be elected by the federal people on the basis of equal, direct, personal, free and secret suffrage by men and women having suffrage to the National Council. If only one candidate stands for election, it shall be carried out in form of a voting. Art. 26 para 5 to 7 shall apply accordingly.
(2) The candidate who polls more than half of all valid votes has been elected. If no such majority results, a second ballot takes place. Votes in this can validly be cast only for one of the two candidates who have polled the most votes in the first ballot.
(3) Only a person who is eligible for election to the National Council and has completed the thirty-fifth year of life on the day of the election can be elected Federal President.

(1) Der Bundespräsident wird vom Bundesvolk auf Grund des gleichen, unmittelbaren, persönlichen, freien und geheimen Wahlrechtes der zum Nationalrat wahlberechtigten Männer und Frauen gewählt; stellt sich nur ein Wahlwerber der Wahl, so ist die Wahl in Form einer Abstimmung durchzuführen. Art. 26 Abs. 5 bis 8 ist sinngemäß anzuwenden.
(2) Gewählt ist, wer mehr als die Hälfte aller gültigen Stimmen für sich hat. Ergibt sich keine solche Mehrheit, so findet ein zweiter Wahlgang statt. Bei diesem können gültigerweise nur für einen der beiden Wahlwerber, die im ersten Wahlgang die meisten Stimmen erhalten haben, Stimmen abgegeben werden.
(3) Zum Bundespräsidenten kann nur gewählt werden, wer zum Nationalrat wählbar ist und am Wahltag das 35. Lebensjahr vollendet hat.
